David Hockney: Shattered Spaces

2021

Hockney: Shattered Spaces, is a comprehensive visual study comprising four district spatial collages, each designed as a conceptual tabletop stage set. Each collage is rooted in the district David Hockney interior painting, including “A Bigger Bridlington Studio Interior (1996)” and “Large Interior, Los Angeles”. The fundamental goal was to explore the power of spatial storytelling by utilizing Hockney’s visual technique if fragmentation and re-linking to create new, dynamic theatrical environments for 3-4 characters per scene. A core methodological constraint was the deliberate limitation of collage materials, which served as a crucial design challenge to maximize the expressive potential and resourcefulness required to generate complex, functional set designs from restricted means.
